Not everybody is born with natural dimples which develop when the skin is not attached to the underlying facial muscles.

A dimple is created when the muscle beneath the skin flexes and pulls the skin. It develops due to an action similar to tugging on the middle of a napkin suspended by its four corners.

Some individuals have dimples while others do not. This happens because certain people are born with tight facial muscles and skin connection, yet a few do not have this type of muscle and skin attachment. However, a procedure known as dimpleplasty can now help create dimples in less than 30 minutes.

Dimple Facts

A dimpleplasty is a type of cosmetic surgery that can create the appearance of dimples on the cheeks. Dimples refer to natural indentations that develop when some people smile and are usually located on the bottom part of the cheeks. Some individuals have chin dimples as well.

At times, dimples may even occur as a result of an injury. Dimples are considered a sign of good luck, beauty, and fortune in some cultures. The number of dimpleplasty procedures has increased significantly in the last few years because of these perceived advantages.

Muse Plastic Surgery, led by dependable double board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Wright Jones, provides dimple surgery to patients in Atlanta, Buckhead, Stockbridge, Marietta, GA, and surrounding locations.

Procedure Details

A dimpleplasty is performed as an outpatient surgery. The patient may sometimes undergo this procedure at the surgeon’s office without the need to visit the hospital. The surgeon will perform this procedure without the use of general anesthesia.

Dimpleplasty is a minimally invasive surgery. In this procedure, the surgeon places a small incision within the patient’s mouth to develop a defect in the cheek. Subsequently, they will attach the muscle to the skin’s undersurface so that when the patient smiles, they will have dimples.

Initially, the surgeon will use a topical anesthetic such as licodaine on the treatment area. This helps the patient remain comfortable during the surgery. The anesthetic takes effect in around ten minutes.

The surgeon will then use a small biopsy tool to make a hole in the patient’s skin to develop a dimple manually. They will remove a tiny amount of fat and muscle to create the dimple. The treatment area is between two and three mm in length.

After creating space for the future dimple, the surgeon positions a suture (sling) from one side of the cheek muscle to the other. They will then tie the sling to set the dimple in position permanently.

Celebrity plastic surgeon Dr. Jones will explain all aspects of the procedure to the patient at the time of initial consultation.

Recovery Phase

Dimpleplasty recovery is relatively simple. The patient will not need to stay in the hospital. They can typically return home right after the procedure.

Shortly after the surgery, the patient may experience mild inflammation. They can apply cold packs to mitigate the inflammation. The swelling typically resolves by itself in some days. A majority of patients can resume their normal routine in nearly two days after the surgery.

The surgeon will likely schedule a follow-up appointment in two weeks following the dimpleplasty to evaluate the outcomes. Famous plastic surgeon Dr. Wright Jones receives patients from Atlanta, Buckhead, Stockbridge, Marietta, GA, and nearby areas in the amazing Peach State for dimple surgery.
